For 1990-2009 cars only
- Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
- Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
- Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
- Inspect the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle .
- Remove the lock cylinder set. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle .
- Place the steering column in the center position.
- Use a small screwdriver to pull the filler plug out of the bottom of the lower trim cover.
- Insert the small screwdriver into the filler plug hole in the bottom of the lower trim cover.
- Use the screwdriver to push up on the manual override of the electric park lock (1).
- Turn the key to the lock position. Remove the key.
- Remove the necessary wire straps from the wire harness assembly.
- Disconnect the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly connector from the telescope module at the base of the column.
- Gently pry the steering column closeout trim cover (1) from the lower trim cover (2).
- Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (4) from the lower trim cover (2).
- Remove the lower trim cover (2) with the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly (3) still attached to the trim cover.
- If necessary, pop the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly (3) out from the lower trim cover (2).
- Remove 1 pan head tapping screw (2) from the upper trim cover (1).
- Remove the upper trim cover (1) with the steering column closeout trim cover (3) still attached.
- If necessary, remove the steering column closeout trim cover from the upper trim cover.
- Remove the black connector (2) from the electric park lock (1).
- Remove the tapping screw (3) from the electric park lock (1) mounting hole and the ignition key alarm switch assembly.
- Pry the electric park lock (1) off of the lock module assembly.
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• Air bag deployment • Personal injury
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• Unnecessary SIR system repairs • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.
