Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step tests for continuity through the 24K ohms resistor and the delay resistors in the windshield wiper/washer switch. The measured resistance will change in sequence from high to low as the delay speed is increased. The connector behind the instrument panel knee bolster is suitable for performing this step.

  2. This step tests for the wipe command from the moisture sensor. The signal voltage will alternate from approximately 0.03 volts to 7.0 volts when the windshield has sufficient moisture accumulation to activate a wipe command.

  1. Disconnect the moisture sensor connector.
  2. Connect a test lamp from the accessory voltage supply circuit terminal in the harness connector to a good ground.
  3. Turn the ignition ON.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp from the accessory voltage supply circuit terminal to the ground circuit terminal in the moisture sensor harness connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp from the windshield washer switch signal circuit terminal in the moisture sensor harness connector to ground.
  2. Press the windshield washer switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the windshield washer switch signal circuit for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Connect the moisture sensor connector.
  2. Disconnect the wiper motor module connector.
  3. Using a DMM measure the voltage at the windshield wiper switch low signal circuit terminal in the harness connector.
  4. Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch to the OFF position.
  5. Turn the ignition ON.

Is the voltage at or near the specified value?

5.0 V

Test the windshield wiper switch low signal circuit for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Disconnect the windshield wiper/washer switch connector.
  2. Connect a DMM from the accessory voltage supply circuit terminal to the windshield washer switch signal circuit terminal in the switch side connector.
  3. Measure the resistance through the windshield wiper/washer switch.
  4. Operate the windshield wiper/washer switch through all of the switch positions.

Is the resistance measurement infinite in any switch position?

  1. Measure the voltage at the windshield wiper switch low signal circuit terminal in the wiper motor module harness connector.
  2. Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch to the highest delay position.
  3. Spray water on the windshield in the area of the moisture sensor.

Does the voltage momentarily increase?

  1. Disconnect the wiper motor module connector.
  2. Connect a test lamp from the windshield wiper motor low speed circuit terminal in the harness connector to ground.
  3. Operate the windshield wiper/washer switch in all of the delay positions.

Does the test lamp illuminate in any of the delay switch positions?

Test the windshield wiper motor low speed circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Disconnect the wiper motor module connector.
  2. Connect a test lamp from battery positive voltage to the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit terminal in the harness connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the accessory voltage supply circuit to the moisture sensor for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
