Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement without JL7
Special Tools
J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin
Removal Procedure
Caution: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate
shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Lock the steering column through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover using the
J 42640 .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
Note: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper instillation.
- Remove the center intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3).
- Remove the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear retaining bolt (4).
Note: Note the relationship of the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear in order to ensure proper instillation.
- Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
- Remove the lower intermediate shaft from the center intermediate shaft.
Installation Procedure
- Connect the lower intermediate shaft to the center intermediate shaft.
- Connect the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the center intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 30 N·m (23 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the
J 42640 from the steering column lower trim cover access hole.
Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement With JL7
Removal Procedure
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Turn the ignition on with the engine off.
Note: After the steering column is removed, the upper intermediate steering shaft must be taped to the upper intermediate steering shaft actuator boot. Any separate movement must be inhibited.
- Remove the steering column. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement.
- Remove the lower intermediate steering shaft bolt (2).
- Separate the lower intermediate steering shaft (1) from the steering gear.
- Remove the lower, intermediate, and upper steering shafts as an assembly through the passenger compartment.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt (1).
Note: Ensure the tape is still holding the upper intermediate steering shaft before separating the lower intermediate steering shaft.
Note: Corrosion can cause difficulty in separating the steering shafts from each other. Do not strike the shafts at any point. Use the appropriate lubricant, rust release, or equivalent only to help loosen the shafts for separation.
- Separate the lower intermediate steering shaft (2) from the center intermediate steering shaft.
Installation Procedure
- Connect the lower intermediate steering shaft (2) to the center intermediate steering shaft.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the intermediate steering shaft bolt (1).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
Note: Vehicles with JL7 have an intermediate steering shaft seal that contains a double lip design. It must be installed correctly or unwanted noise and resistance in the steering could occur. After positioning the steering shafts in
place inspect the passenger compartment side for proper installation. The lip of the seal should be visible completely around the entire circumference with no wrinkles or folds.
- Install the lower, intermediate, and upper steering shafts as an assembly through the passenger compartment.
Note: Inspect the engine compartment side for proper intermediate steering shaft seal installation. The lip of the seal should be visible completely around the entire circumference with no wrinkles or folds. It must be installed correctly
or unwanted noise and resistance in the steering could occur.
- Connect the lower intermediate steering shaft (1) to the steering gear.
- Install the lower intermediate steering shaft bolt (2).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Remove the tape from the upper intermediate steering shaft and boot.
- Install the steering column. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement.
- Perform the diagnostic system check. Refer to
