Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step checks to see that the door module associated with the inoperative window recognizes the switch input.

  2. This step eliminates the door module battery positive voltage and ground circuits associated with connector C5 as the cause.

  3. This step begins to determine if the window motor control circuits, the window motor, or the door module outputs are the cause of the malfunction.

  4. This step will determine if any of the window switch signal circuits are shorted to battery positive voltage. The test lamp should not illuminate for any of the signal circuits probed.

  5. This step eliminates the window switch ground and Up signal circuits as the cause of the malfunction. The step also begins to determine if the window switch may be at fault.

    If the 3 amp jumper wire fuse opens when the jumper wire is connected, the window switch Up signal circuit may be shorted to battery positive voltage.

  6. This step eliminates the window switch Down signal circuit as the cause of the malfunction. The step also continues to determine if the window switch may be at fault.

    If the 3 amp jumper wire fuse opens when the jumper wire is connected, the window switch Down signal circuit may be shorted to battery positive voltage.

  7. This step determines if the window switch is at fault, or if the malfunction is in the window switch Express signal circuit or door module.

    If the 3 amp jumper wire fuse opens when the jumper wire is connected, the window switch Express signal circuit may be shorted to battery positive voltage.

DEFINITION: A passenger door window fails to operate from a passenger door window switch, or, fails to operate from both the passenger door window switch, and the driver door switch assembly (DDSA). If the front passenger door window is inoperative in only the Express Up direction, refer to Power Window Express Up Function Inoperative

Verify that the Power Windows Inoperative-Passenger Door complaint is present.

Do the passenger door windows operate as described in the Description and Operation?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With the scan tool, select Driver Door Module, Data Display, Inputs.
  4. With the scan tool, observe the appropriate passenger Door Window Sw. parameter for the inoperative window. Pass. Door Window Sw., Lt. Rear Door Window Sw, or Rt. Rear Door Window Sw.
  5. Operate the passenger door window switch associated with the inoperative window to the Up, Down, and Express Down positions.

Did the appropriate Door Window Sw. parameter change from the Idle state to the Up, Down, and Express Down states as expected?

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the C5 harness connector of the door module associated with the inoperative window.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit and the ground circuit of the connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 5

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect the door module C5 harness connector.
  3. Disconnect the harness connector of the window motor that is associated with the inoperative window.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Connect a test lamp between the power window motor Up circuit of the harness connector and a good ground.
  6. Operate the passenger door window switch associated with the inoperative window to the Up position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

  1. Connect a test lamp between the power window motor Down circuit of the harness connector and a good ground.
  2. Operate the passenger door window switch associated with the inoperative window to the Down position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

  1. Connect a test lamp between the power window motor Up circuit and the power window motor Down circuit of the harness connector.
  2. Operate the passenger door window switch associated with the inoperative window to both the Up and Down positions.

Does the test lamp illuminate for both the Up and Down positions?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector of the window switch associated with the inoperative window.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a test lamp connected to a good ground, probe each one of the window switch signal circuits of the harness connector.

Did the test lamp illuminate while probing any of the signal circuits?

Go to Step 16

  1. Connect a 3 amp fused jumper wire between the switch ground circuit and the switch Up signal circuit of the harness connector.
  2. Observe the appropriate Door Window Sw. parameter for the inoperative window.

Does the Door Window Sw. parameter indicate UP?

  1. Connect a 3 amp fused jumper wire between the switch ground circuit and the switch Down signal circuit of the harness connector.
  2. Observe the appropriate Door Window Sw. parameter for the inoperative window.

Does the Door Window Sw. parameter indicate Down?

  1. Make sure the 3 amp fused jumper wire is still installed between the switch ground circuit and the switch Down signal circuit of the harness connector.
  2. Connect an additional 3 amp fused jumper wire between the switch ground circuit and the switch Express signal circuit of the harness connector.
  3. Observe the appropriate Door Window Sw. parameter for the inoperative window.

Does the Door Window Sw. parameter indicate the Express Down state?

Test the battery positive voltage circuit associated with connector C5 for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the window motor control circuits of the inoperative window for shorts to ground, shorts to each other, and opens. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
