DEFINITION: The headlamp washers are inoperative. The windshield washers and headlamps operate normally. The LOW WASHER FLUID message is not displayed.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn the headlamps ON.
  3. Depress the windshield washer switch 4 times.

Do the headlamp washers operate at the fourth press of the windshield washer switch?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Use the special function Headlamp Washer on the scan tool under Wipers/Washer Systems menu.

Do the headlamp washers operate when the headlamp washer relay is commanded ON?

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the body control module (BCM).
  3. Disconnect the W/S WASH relay.
  4. Test the windshield washer switch signal between BCM connector and W/S WASH relay for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 18

  1. Turn the headlamps OFF.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition.
  3. Disconnect the headlamp washer relay.
  4. Connect a test lamp from the battery voltage circuit of the headlamp washer relay switched input to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

  1. Connect a 30-amp fused jumper wire across the headlamp washer relay switched input and output.
  2. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  3. Turn the headlamps ON.
  4. Depress the windshield washer switch 4 times.

Does the headlamp washer fluid pump operate?

Go to Step 10

  1. Connect the headlamp washer relay.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector of the headlamp washer fluid pump.
  3. Connect a test lamp from the headlamp washer pump control circuit to the ground circuit of the headlamp washer fluid pump connector.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Turn the headlamps ON.
  6. Depress the windshield washer switch 4 times.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 12

  1. Connect a test lamp from the headlamp washer pump control circuit of the headlamp washer pump to a good ground.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Turn the headlamps ON.
  4. Depress the windshield washer switch 4 times.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 15

Repair the battery voltage circuit of the headlamp washer relay switched input for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 18

Inspect for poor connections at the headlamp washer relay. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the headlamp washer relay.

Is the repair complete?

Inspect for poor connections at the headlamp washer fluid pump. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the headlamp washer fluid pump. Refer to Headlamp Washer Pump Replacement .

Repair an open or high resistance on the headlamp washer pump control circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair an open or high resistance on the windshield washer pump ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the BCM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Replace the BCM. Refer to Control Module References in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.

  1. Reconnect all previous disconnected components.
  2. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
