Steering Wheel Controls Inoperative Audio

Diagnostic Aids

    • If the vehicle is equipped with RPO K59 and the adaptive cruise control GAP UP/DOWN switch is the only inoperative switch, refer to Cruise Control Gap Up/Down Switch Malfunction in Cruise Control for diagnosis.
    • If the vehicle is not equipped with RPO K59 and the MUTE/SEEK UP switch is the only inoperative switch, refer to Steering Wheel Controls Inoperative and select MUTE/SEEK UP Switch Inoperative.

Operate all of the steering wheel controls.

Do all of the steering wheel controls operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Test the steering wheel control supply voltage circuit for a short to ground or open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Caution: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling . Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Test the resistance of the steering wheel control switches.
  2. Press the steering wheel control switches to the correct function, one at a time, and compare the measured values to those shown.
  3. Measure the resistance between the steering wheel control supply voltage circuit and the steering wheel controls signal circuit at the CD changer.

Are the measured resistances approximately equal to the specified values?

Preset Seek Down: 12.7K ohms

Preset Seek Up: 13K ohms

Volume Down: 13.35K ohms

Volume Up: 13.8K ohms

Voice Recognition: 14.5K ohms

Source: 15.7K ohms

Test the steering wheel controls signal circuit for a short, high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the radio. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the steering wheel radio controls. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the appropriate steering wheel radio control. Refer to Steering Wheel Control Switch Assembly Replacement .

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  3. Select service category Cruise Control/Data Display/BCM.
  4. Attempt to adjust the MUTE/SEEK UP switch.
  5. With a scan tool, observe the ACC Gap Switch parameter in the BCM Data List.

Does the ACC Gap Switch parameter indicate Up when SEEK UP is selected and Down when MUTE is selected?

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the body control module (BCM).
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test light between the steering wheel controls 2 signal circuit and a good ground.
  5. Momentarily press the /SEEK UP switch.

Does the test light illuminate when the SEEK UP switch is pressed?

Test the steering wheel controls 2 signal circuit for an open, short to ground or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the BCM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
