Circuit/System Description

The folding top module controls the opening and closing of the rear compartment lid based on an input from either the interior lid release switch, exterior lid release switch, or the lid close switch.

The interior rear compartment lid release switch is located in the passenger compartment, near the driver left knee bolster. This switches function is to open the rear compartment lid. With the switch pressed, the trunk release switch supply voltage circuit from the body control module (BCM) is grounded. Upon seeing this input, the BCM will request the folding top module begin raising or lowering the rear compartment lid.

The exterior rear compartment lid release switch is located at the rear of the vehicle, under the upper lip of the license plate pocket. This switches function is only to open the rear compartment lid. With the switch pressed, the trunk release switch signal circuit from the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR) is grounded. Upon seeing this input, the RCDLR will request the folding top module begin raising or lowering the rear compartment lid.

The rear compartment lid close switch is located on the underside of the rear compartment lid; it is only accessible when the lid is open. This switches function is only to close the lid. With the switch pressed, voltage supplied from the AC LATCH PK BRK B fuse is applied to the rear compartment lid release close switch signal circuit at the folding top module. Upon seeing this input, the folding top module will begin raising or lowering the rear compartment lid.

Diagnostic Aids

The rear compartment lid release will be inoperative if the vehicle is placed in valet mode. This is by design and does not designate a malfunction. Lid release functions will resume once the vehicle is taken out of valet mode.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Trunk Release Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the interior rear compartment lid release switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.
  2. If the value does not change, refer to Interior Trunk Release Switch Malfunction.
  3. Observe the scan tool Ext. Rear Compartment Lid Release Sw. parameter while pressing and releasing the exterior rear compartment lid release switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.
  4. If the value does not change, refer to Exterior Trunk Release Switch Malfunction.
  5. Insert the key into the trunk lock cylinder and observe the scan tool Trunk Key Cylinder Switch parameter while turning the key to the OPEN position, the parameter should change between Inactive and Active.
  6. If the value does not change, refer to Trunk Key Switch Malfunction.
  7. Observe the scan tool Rear Compartment Lid Pull Down Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the rear compartment lid release switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.
  8. If the value does not change, refer to Rear Compartment Lid Release Switch Malfunction.
  9. Command the Trunk Release with a scan tool, the rear compartment lid pulldown actuator should release the trunk lid.
  10. If the trunk lid does not release, refer to Trunk Release Malfunction.

Circuit/System Testing

Interior Trunk Release Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the interior rear compartment lid release switch.
  2. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the ground circuit terminal A.
  3. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Trunk Release Switch parameter is Inactive.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal D for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  6. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal D and ground. Verify the scan tool Trunk release Switch parameter is Active.
  7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the interior rear compartment lid release switch.

Exterior Trunk Release Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the exterior rear compartment lid release switch.
  2. Test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal C and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Ext. Rear Compartment Lid Release Sw. parameter is Inactive.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal A for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR).
  6. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal A and ground. Verify the scan tool Ext. Rear Compartment Lid Release Sw. parameter is Active.
  7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR).
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the exterior rear compartment lid release switch.

Trunk Key Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the rear compartment lid pull down actuator.
  2. Test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal F and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Trunk Key Cylinder Switch parameter in Theft Data is Inactive.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal E for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  6. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal E and ground. Verify the scan tool Trunk Key Cylinder Switch parameter is Active.
  7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the rear compartment lid pull down actuator.

Rear Compartment Lid Release Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the rear compartment lid/release close switch.
  2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal D and ground.
