Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 188000  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  4. Remove the air inlet duct from the throttle body assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
  5. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  7. Remove the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement in Exterior Trim.
  8. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  10. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  11. Remove the valve lifters and the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Lifter Removal .
  12. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

  13. Object Number: 45986  Size: SH
  14. Remove the crankshaft position reluctor ring.
  15. Remove the camshaft timing chain and the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .

  16. Object Number: 9847  Size: SH
  17. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.

  18. Object Number: 5147  Size: SH
  19. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 5147  Size: SH

    Important: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:

       • Change the engine oil.
       • Change the engine oil filter.
       • Add GM Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent to the engine oil.

  1. Install the camshaft into the engine block. Refer to Camshaft Installation .

  2. Object Number: 9847  Size: SH
  3. Install the balance shaft drive gear. Refer to Balance Shaft Installation for alignment of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear.
  4. Important: Line up the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket dot to dot. When these dots are lined up dot to dot, the number four cylinder is at the top dead center of its compression stroke.

  5. Install the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  6. Notice: Failure to properly align the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring may result in component damage and effect OBD II system performance.

  7. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement .
  8. Install the valve lifters and the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  9. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  10. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  11. Important: Rotate the engine to align the crankshaft balancer marks with the front cover marks for cylinder number one top dead center. When the alignments marks on the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket are aligned, the engine is at cylinder number four top dead center.

  12. Install the distributor. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  14. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  15. Install the condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  16. Install the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement in Exterior Trim.
  17. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  18. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  19. Remove the inlet duct to the throttle body assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
  20. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  21. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
