Cylinder Head Replacement Left

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 288833  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the air conditioning compressor, if equipped. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC - Manual.
  5. Remove the nut holding the power steering pump rear bracket to the engine.

  6. Object Number: 475833  Size: SH

    Important: The power steering pump can remain on the power steering pump mounting bracket. The pump hoses can remain attached to the pump.

  7. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket and set aside. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement .
  8. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.
  9. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  10. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .

  11. Object Number: 363401  Size: SH
  12. Remove the ground wires at the rear of the left cylinder head.
  13. Remove the A/C pipe bracket nut, if equipped.
  14. Remove the fuel pipe bracket bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.
  15. Remove the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  16. Remove the cylinder head and the gasket. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal .
  17. Clean the engine block and the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
  18. Notice: Clean all dirt, debris, and coolant from the engine block cylinder head bolt holes. Failure to remove all foreign material may result in damaged threads, improperly tightened fasteners or damage to components.

  19. Clean the cylinder head bolts and the engine block bolt holes.
  20. For further service to the cylinder head refer to the following:
  21. • Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble .
    • Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
    • Refer to Valve Guide Reaming, and Valve and Seat Grinding .
    • Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation .
  2. Install the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 363401  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the ground wires and bolt at the rear of the left cylinder head.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the ground wire bolt to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  6. Install the fuel pipe bracket and stud at the rear of the cylinder head.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel pipe bracket stud to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  8. Install the A/C pipe bracket and nut, if equipped.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C pipe bracket nut to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  10. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  11. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  12. Object Number: 475833  Size: SH
  13. Install the stud for the power steering pump mounting bracket to the cylinder head.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump mounting bracket stud to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  15. Install the power steering pump mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement .

  16. Object Number: 288833  Size: SH
  17. Install the nut holding the power steering pump rear bracket to the engine.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump rear bracket nut to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

  19. Install the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC - Manual.
  20. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  21. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  22. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.

Cylinder Head Replacement Right

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  6. Remove the spark plug wire harness support.
  7. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 475837  Size: SH
  9. Remove the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement .
  10. Remove the generator mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.
  11. Remove the engine wiring harness bolt from the rear of the right cylinder head.
  12. Remove the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  13. Remove the cylinder head and the gasket. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal .
  14. Clean the engine block and the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
  15. Notice: Clean all dirt, debris, and coolant from the engine block cylinder head bolt holes. Failure to remove all foreign material may result in damaged threads, improperly tightened fasteners or damage to components.

  16. Clean the cylinder head bolts and the engine block bolt holes.
  17. For further service to the cylinder head refer to the following:

  4. Object Number: 317450  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   5. Install the spark plug wire harness and support.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the spark plug wire support bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  7. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 475837  Size: SH
  9. Install the stud for the generator mounting bracket.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the generator mounting bracket stud to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  11. Install the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement .
  12. Install the bolt holding the engine wiring harness to the rear of the right cylinder head.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the engine wiring harness bolt to 36 N·m (27 lb ft).

  14. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  15. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
