Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 21366 Converter Holding Strap

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Drain the transmission fluid, if necessary. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement .
  3. Remove the shift cable from the transmission. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement .
  4. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  5. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  6. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Transfer Case.
  7. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  8. Remove the filler tube from the transmission. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  9. Plug the fluid fill tube opening in the transmission.
  10. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  11. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the vehicle speed sensor and from the park/neutral position switch.
  12. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  13. Plug the transmission oil cooler lines connectors in the transmission case.
  14. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  16. Remove nine bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
  17. Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
  18. Install the J 21366 in order to keep the torque converter from sliding off of the transmission turbine shaft.
  19. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  20. Flush the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the J 21366 in order to keep the torque converter from sliding off of the transmission turbine shaft.
  2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the J 21366 .
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the nine bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  6. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  7. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Unplug the transmission oil cooler lines connectors in the transmission case.
  9. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  10. Connect the wiring harness connector to the vehicle speed sensor and the park/neutral position switch.
  11. Unplug the fluid fill tube opening in the transmission.
  12. Install the filler tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  13. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  14. If equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Transfer Case.
  15. If equipped with a transfer case, Install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  16. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  17. Install the shift cable to the transmission. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement .
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Fill the transmission with new transmission fluid, if necessary. Refer to Fluid Capacity .
  20. Important: It is recommended that the transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

    Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn the TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned,

  21. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Adapt Function .
