Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  2. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  3. Loosen the oil pan.

  5. Remove the crankshaft position sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.

  6. Object Number: 4068  Size: SH
  7. Remove the front cover bolts.
  8. Important: Use care when removing the front cover from the front of the oil pan seal.

  9. Remove the front cover.
  10. Clean the varnish and the sludge buildup from the front cover area.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Any time the front cover is removed, replace the front cover. If the cover that was removed is reinstalled, oil leaks may develop.

  1. Use care when engaging the front of the oil pan seal with the bottom of the front cover.
  2. Lubricate the front of the oil pan seal with engine oil to aid reassembly.
  3. Install the new front cover.
  4. Install the front cover bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the front cover to block bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in.).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the crankshaft position sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.
  7. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement
  8. Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
