Notice: When adding coolant, use DEX-COOL® coolant. If silicated coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner-at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.

Check the radiator for the following:

    • Obstructed cooling area around the radiator
    • Plugged radiator fins
    • Bent radiator fins

Correct or repair as necessary. Refer to Radiator Cleaning .

Check for a loose drive belt.

Is the drive belt loose?

  1. Pressure test the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Leak Testing .
  2. Check for coolant leaks.

Are there any coolant leaks?

Repair any coolant leaks as necessary.

Check the condition of the drive belt. Replace if cracks, glazing, or is out of specification. Refer to Drive Belt Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical.

Is the temperature level of the thermostat normal?

Check for a clogged radiator. Refer to Flushing .

Are the radiator coolant passages normal?

Check for a blockage in the engine block coolant passages. Refer to Flushing .

Check if there are any combustion chamber gases leaking into the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Leak Testing .

    • A heavy vehicle payload
    • The A/C system
    • Excess engine oil
    • Extreme air temperature
