Cause

Action

The clearance between the holes in the support or the housing and the pivot pin diameter is excessive.

Inspect for the following conditions:

    • The holes in the support are out of round.
    • The housing is damaged.
    • The pivot pin is not seated correctly.

Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The joint preload spring is broken or missing.

Replace the joint preload spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The upper bearing is not seated in the housing.

Seat the bearing in the housing. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The upper bearing inner race seal is missing.

Replace the inner race seal. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The support screws are loose.

Tighten the support screws to the specified torque. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .
