Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement Tilt Column

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 324919  Size: SH
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement .
  3. Remove the shift lever assembly. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement .
  4. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
  5. Remove the tilt spring assembly. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
  6. Use a screwdriver to gently pry the automatic transmission shift lock control from the steering column jacket assembly.
  7. Remove the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .

  9. Remove the steering column seal (3) from the adapter and bearing assembly (2).
  10. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (2) from the steering column jacket assembly (1).

  11. Object Number: 306307  Size: SH
  12. Remove the 2 pivot pins (3) from the steering column support assembly (1) using J 21854-01  (2).

  13. Object Number: 306309  Size: SH
  14. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column jacket assembly (2) with the lower steering shaft (3) still attached.

  15. Object Number: 306316  Size: SH
  16. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  17. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly before disassembly. Failure to assemble the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly correctly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  18. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly (1) 90 degrees to the lower shaft assembly (2).
  19. Disengage the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from the lower shaft assembly (2).

  21. Remove the 4 TORX® head screws (2) from the steering column support assembly (1).
  22. Remove the steering column support assembly (1) from the steering column jacket assembly.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 306322  Size: SH

    Important: Once the steering column support and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times, replace the steering column support.

  1. Install the 4 TORX® head screws (2) onto the steering column support assembly (1).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  3. Lubricate the race and upper shaft assembly with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516), then install the lower shaft assembly using the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure.

  4. Object Number: 306316  Size: SH
  5. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  6. Object Number: 306309  Size: SH
  7. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  8. Object Number: 560759  Size: SH

    Important: Once the steering column support and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times, replace the steering column support.

  9. Lubricate the pivot pins (1) with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).
  10. Firmly seat each pivot pin (1) into the steering column tilt head assembly.
  11. Stake the pivot pins (1).

  13. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (2) onto the steering column jacket assembly (1).
  14. Install the steering column seal (3) onto the adapter and bearing assembly (2).
  15. Install the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .

  16. Object Number: 324919  Size: SH

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  17. Install the automatic transmission shift lock control.
  18. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
  19. Install the shift lever assembly only. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement .
  20. Put the shift lever in the NEUTRAL position.

  21. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
  22. Install the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement .
  23. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.

Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement Standard Column

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 361733  Size: SH
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement .
  3. Remove the shift lever assembly. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement .
  4. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
  5. Use a screwdriver to gently pry the automatic transmission shift lock control from the steering column jacket assembly.
  6. Remove the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement

  7. Object Number: 361431  Size: SH
  8. Remove the 4 TORX® head screws from the steering column housing assembly.
  9. Remove the steering column housing assembly from the steering column housing jacket.

  10. Object Number: 361735  Size: SH
  11. Remove the following parts from the steering column jacket assembly:
  12. 9.1. The steering column seal (3).
    9.2. The adapter and bearing assembly (2).
    9.3. The lower steering shaft (1).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 361431  Size: SH
  1. Install the steering column housing assembly onto the steering column housing jacket assembly.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the 4 TORX® head screws to the steering column housing assembly.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m(13 lb ft).

  5. Install the following parts onto the steering column jacket assembly:
  6. 3.1. The steering shaft (1).
    3.2. The adapter and bearing assembly (2).
    3.3. The steering column seal (3).
    3.4. Install the linear shift assembly Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement

    Object Number: 361733  Size: SH

  12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
