Removal Tool
Removal Procedure
- Shift the transmission into the 3rd or 4th mechanical gear position.
- Remove the shift lever. Refer to
Shift Lever Replacement
.
- Remove the shift housing. Refer to
Shift Tower Replacement
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to
Front Propeller Shaft Replacement
or to
One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
or to
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
in Propeller Shaft.
- Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the vehicle speed sensor
and back up switch.
- Disconnect the wiring harness retainers from the right side of the transmission.
- Remove the catalytic converter
Catalytic Converter Replacement
in Exhaust.
- Remove
three bolts, two nuts and washers securing the transfer case shield to the frame
rail and transmission (If the vehicle is equipped with four wheel drive).
- Remove the bolt securing the
left side brace to the transmission.
- Remove the bolt and stud securing
the left side brace to the transfer case.
- Remove the bolt securing the
right side brace to the transmission.
- Remove the bolt securing the
right side brace to the transfer case.
- Remove the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to
Transfer Case Replacement
.
- Disconnect the hydraulic clutch
line quick connect from the concentric slave cylinder.
- Use special tool J 42371
to depress the white plastic sleeve on the quick connect to separate the
clutch line end from the concentric slave cylinder quick connect.
- Remove four bolts securing the clutch housing cover to the transmission.
- Support the transmission with a jack.
- Remove the wiring harness from the front crossmember.
- Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the top of the transmission.
- Remove the fuel line retainers from the top of the transmission.
- Remove the bolt, washer, and
nut securing the wiring harness ground wires to the engine block.
- Remove five bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
Pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines.
- Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
Installation Procedure
- Raise the transmission using the transmission jack.
- Place the fuel line retainers on top of the transmission.
- Install the transmission to the
engine and secure with bolts.
• | Push the transmission straight back onto the clutch hub splines. |
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
• | Tighten the transmission to the engine bolts. |
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Install the bolt, washer and nut securing the wiring harness ground wires
to the engine block.
- Install the hydraulic clutch
line to the concentric slave cylinder quick connect.
- Install two bolts securing the
transmission right side brace to the engine and transmission
Tighten
Tighten the right side brace bolts to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install two bolts and a nut securing the transmission left side brace
to the engine and transmission
Tighten
Tighten the left side brace bolts and nut to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install the bolt and stud securing
the transmission left side brace to the transfer case.
Tighten
Tighten the left side brace bolt and stud to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install the left side brace
to the transmission with the bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the left side brace bolt and stud to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install the right side brace
to the transmission with the bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the left side brace bolt and stud to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install the bolt securing the
right side brace to the transfer case.
Tighten
Tighten the left side brace bolt and stud to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install the catalytic converter hanger and exhaust section. Refer to
Exhaust System
Catalytic Converter Replacement
.
- Install the exhaust pipes to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust System
Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement
.
- Connect the muffler to the catalytic converter. Refer to Exhaust System
Muffler Replacement
.
- Install the wiring harness retainers to the right side of the transmission.
- Install the wiring harness connectors to the vehicle speed sensor and
back up switch.
- Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft
Front Propeller Shaft Replacement

- Install the park brake cable. Refer to Park Brake
Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement

- Install the shift housing. Refer to

- Install the shift lever. Refer to
