The Engine Does Not Crank and the Solenoid Does Not Click

  1. Turn ON the headlights.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Do the headlights dim while the ignition switch is in the START position?

Load test the battery. Refer to Battery Electrical Drain/Parasitic Load Test .

Is the battery within the specifications?

Does the vehicle have an automatic transmission?

  1. Place the transmission in PARK.
  2. Connect a voltmeter J 39200 from the PPL 6 wire at the starter solenoid and to ground.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Is the voltage reading within the specification?

12-14 V

  1. Depress the clutch pedal.
  2. Connect a voltmeter J 39200 from the PPL 6 wire at the starter solenoid and to ground.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Is the voltage reading within the specification?

12-14 V

  1. Connect a voltmeter from the PPL 6 wire to the starter mounting bolt.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Is the voltage reading within the specification?

12-14 V

  1. Disconnect the Park/Neutral/Reverse switch connector C1.
  2. Connect a voltmeter J 39200 from the Ale 5 wire at the PNR switch connector and to ground.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Is the voltage reading within the specification?

12-14 V

  1. Disconnect the Clutch Start Switch connector.
  2. Connect a voltmeter J 39200 from the Ale 5 wire at the Clutch Start Switch connector and to ground.
  3. Turn the Ignition switch to START.

Is the voltage reading within the specification?

12-14 V

  1. Connect a Fused Jumper J 36169-A from the Park/Neutral/Reverse switch connector at Ale 5 wire and to the PPL 6 wire.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Connect a voltmeter J 39200 from the ignition switch Ale 5 wire and to ground.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Is the voltage reading within the specification?

12-14 V

  1. Depress the clutch pedal.
  2. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL.
  3. Set the parking brake.
  4. Connect a Fused Jumper J 36169-A from the Ale 5 to the PPL 6 wire at the Clutch Start Switch connector.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Does the engine crank?

Connect a voltmeter from the ignition switch RED 1442 wire and to ground.

Is the voltage reading within the specification?

12-14 V

Connect a voltmeter J 39200 from the Battery Junction Block to Fusible Link B and to ground.

Is the voltmeter reading within the specification?

12-14 V

Is the voltmeter reading within the specification?

Clean the starter mounting bolts, and the starter mounting surface.

Install a replacement battery. Refer to Battery Replacement .

Replace the starter solenoid. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Install a new Park/Neutral/Reverse switch.

Locate and repair Open in the PPL 6 wire from the PNR switch to the starter solenoid.

Is the repair complete?

Locate and repair Open Ale 5 wire from the ignition switch to the Clutch Start switch (man.) or the PNR switch (auto).

Is the repair complete?

Adjust, or install a new Clutch Start Switch.

Locate and repair Open in PPL 6 wire from the Clutch Start Switch connector to the starter solenoid.

Locate and repair the Open in the Fusible Link B or in the RED 1442 wire from the Fusible Link B to the ignition switch.
