Tools Required

    • J 23653-SIR Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor
    • J 42137 Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor Adapter

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Important: Let the SIR coil hang freely after removal.

  3. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.
  4. Compress the cam orientation plate using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .
  5. Remove the bearing retainer using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 from the steering column shaft assembly.
  6. Remove J 23653-SIR and J 42137 from the steering column shaft assembly.
  7. Discard the bearing retainer.

  9. Remove the following parts from the steering column shaft assembly:
  10. 7.1. The cam orientation plate (5)
    7.2. The turn signal cancel cam assembly (4)
    7.3. The upper bearing spring (3)
    7.4. The upper bearing inner race seat (2)
    7.5. The inner race (1)
  11. Remove the steering shaft and tilt head housing as an assembly. Refer to Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement .
  12. Remove the tilt head housing from the steering shaft.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 664266  Size: SH
  1. Install the tilt head housing onto the steering shaft.
  2. Install the steering shaft and tilt head housing as an assembly. Refer to Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement .
  3. Lubricate the inner race (1) with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516)
  4. Lubricate the lower brass surface of the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) with GM P/N 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529)
  5. Install the following parts onto the steering column shaft assembly:
  6. 5.1. The inner race (1)
    5.2. The upper bearing inner race seat (2)
    5.3. The upper bearing spring (3)
    5.4. The turn signal cancel cam assembly (4)
    5.5. The cam orientation plate (5)

  7. Install the new bearing retainer onto the steering column shaft assembly.
  8. Compress the cam orientation plate using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .
  9. Firmly seat the bearing retainer into the groove on the steering column shaft assembly.

  10. Remove J 23653-SIR from the steering column shaft assembly.
  11. Install the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.
  12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
