Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly LT1

Removal Procedure

RH Harness

    Notice: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

    Important: When replacing spark plug wire harnesses (secondary wiring), route the wires correctly, and through the proper retainers. Failure to route the wires properly may lead to the following conditions:

       • Radio ignition noise
       • Cross-firing of the spark plugs
       • Shorting of the leads to ground

  1. Turn the ignition to the OFF or LOCK position.
  2. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Section 0A.
  3. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Section 3B.
  4. Remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump.

  6. Remove the wire harness from the harness clips.
  7. Remove the spark plug wire harness from the distributor.

  8. Object Number: 14778  Size: SH
  9. Remove the spark plug wire harness from the spark plugs.

LH Harness

  1. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Section 0A.
  2. Remove the left side oxidation catalytic converter. Refer to Oxidation Catalytic Converter .
  3. Remove the temperature sensor in the cylinder head.
  4. Remove the spark plug wire heat shield bolts.
  5. Remove the spark plug heat shield.
  6. Disconnect the spark plug wires at the spark plugs.

  8. Separate the harness from the clips.
  9. Remove the harness from the distributor.
  10. Important: Note the position of the spark plug wires before removing them from the vehicle.

  11. Remove the LH spark plug wire harness from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

RH Harness


    Object Number: 14778  Size: SH
  1. Connect the spark plug harness to the spark plugs.

  2. Object Number: 17291  Size: SH
  3. Install the spark plug wire harness to the distributor.

  4. Object Number: 14785  Size: SH
  5. Install the wire harness to the harness clips.
  6. Install the lower radiator hose to the water pump.
  7. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Section 3A.
  8. Lower the vehicle.

LH Harness


    Object Number: 14780  Size: SH
  1. Install the LH spark plug wire harness to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 14785  Size: SH
  3. Install the harness support on the clip.

  4. Object Number: 17291  Size: SH
  5. Install the harness on the distributor.
  6. Install the harness to the clips.
  7. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
  8. Install the spark plug heat shield.
  9. Install the spark plug heat shield bolts.
  10. Install the temperature sensor to the cylinder head.
  11. Install the left side oxidation catalytic converter. Refer to Oxidation Catalytic Converter .
  12. Lower the vehicle.

Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly L36

Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the ignition to OFF or to LOCK.
  2. Notice: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  3. Remove the spark plug wire harness from the following components:
  4. • the spark plug wire harness retainers
    • the ignition control module
    • the spark plugs

Installation Procedure

Important: The lower tabs of the heat shield must extend over the hex on the spark plug in order to complete installation of the heat shield and the boot on the spark plug.

  1. Install the spark plug wire harness to the spark plugs.

  2. Object Number: 43661  Size: SH
  3. Install the spark plug wire harness to the ignition control module.
  4. Install the spark plug wire harness to the spark plug wire harness retainers.
