Removal Procedure
Notice: Automatic transmission oil cooler flushing must be performed when an
automatic transmission is removed for service. The flushing procedure should
be performed after the removal of the old transmission and before the installation
of the overhauled or replacement transmission. Failure to flush the system
may cause damage to the system and its components.
Tools Required
J 21366 Converter
Holding Strap
If the transmission will be removed for repair, refer to section 7A-14A
for diagnosis prior to removing the transmission.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
in General Information.
- Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
- Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General
Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
- Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement
in Driveline/Axle.
Important: Position the electrical harness away from the transmission in order
to prevent damage to the harness or the connectors.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the transmission and the vehicle
speed sensor.
- Disconnect the steering column shift control linkage from the
transmission. Refer to
Shift Control Linkage Replacement
.
- Remove the transmission converter cover bolts/screws.
- Remove the transmission converter cover from the transmission.
- If the transmission converter will be reused, mark the position
of the flywheel-to-converter on the converter in order to maintain the original
balance during assembly.
- Remove the flywheel bolts and screws. Discard the flywheel bolts and screws.
- Use a transmission jack to support the transmission.
- Loosen the catalytic converter-to-intermediate pipe bolts/screws
in order to allow for pivot.
- Remove the transmission mount nut.
- Remove the transmission mount washer.
- Remove the transmission support bolts and screws.
- Remove the transmission support from the vehicle.

Refer to
Converter Braces
in Engine Exhaust.
- Lower the transmission in order to access the oil cooler upper
and lower pipes.
- Remove the fill tube bolt and screw.
- Place a drain pan under the transmission.
- Remove the full tube from the transmission.
- Plug the transmission.
- Remove the oil cooler upper and lower pipes from the transmission.
- Plug all of the openings.
- Support the engine.
- Remove the transmission bolts and screws.
- Attach the J 21366
to the transmission in order to retain the transmission converter.
- Carefully lower the transmission in order to avoid damage to the
accelerator control cable, the pipes, or the shift control linkage.
- Clean the transmission oil cooler. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing
.
Installation Procedure
- Raise the transmission until the alignment pins on the engine
align with the alignment pin holes in the transmission.
- Remove the J 21366
.
- Install the transmission bolts/screws.
Tighten
Tighten the transmission bolts/screws to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Remove the engine support.
- Install the oil cooler upper and lower
pipes to the transmission.
Tighten
Tighten the oil cooler upper and lower pipe fittings to 21 N·m
(15 lb ft).
- Install the fill tube to the transmission.
- Install the tube bolt/screw.
Tighten
Tighten the fill tube bolt/screw to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
