Removal Procedure
Tools Required
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.

- Remove the intake air duct. Refer to Air Cleaner (2.2L) in Engine
Controls.
- Remove the TV cable, if equipped. Refer to
Automatic Transmission Throttle Valve Cable Replacement
.
- Remove the shift cable and the bracket. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement
.
- Remove the vacuum lines.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Remove the power steering pump and set aside. Refer to Power Steering
Pump Assembly (2.2L).
- Remove the filler tube. Refer to Filler Tube and Seal Replacement
.
- Install the J 28467-360
to
the transmission.
- Remove the top transmission to engine bolts.
- Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer
to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
- Remove both of the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel
Removal in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the left splash shield.
- Remove both of the front ABS wheel speed sensors and the harness
from the left suspension support. Refer to Front Wheel Speed Sensor in Antilock
Brake System and Enhanced Traction Control.
- Remove both of the lower ball joints. Refer to Ball Joint in Front
Suspension.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft links. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft in
Front Suspension.
- Remove the front air deflector.
- Remove the left suspension support. Refer to General Body Costruction
in Underbody.
- Remove both of the drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle.
- Remove the engine to transmission brace.
- Remove the transmission converter cover bolts.
- Remove the transmission converter cover.
- Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine
Electrical.
- Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
- Remove the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to
Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement
.
- Remove the ground wires from the engine to transmission bolt.
- Remove the cooler pipe brace.
- Remove the exhaust brace.
- Remove the bolts from the engine and transmission mount.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the transmission mount to body bolts. Refer to
Transmission Mount Replacement
.
- Remove the heater core hose pipe brace to transmission nut and
bolt.
- Remove the remaining transmission to engine bolts.
- Remove the transmission assembly.
- Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with the J 35944-A
, or equivalent, whenever the transmission
has been removed for overhaul or replacement. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing
.
Installation Procedure
- Place a thin film of grease GM P/N 1051344, or equivalent, on
the torque converter pilot knob.
- Properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.
- Install the transmission assembly into position with a jack, while installing
the right drive axle.
- Install the lower engine to transmission bolts in the proper location.
- Install the transmission mount to body bolts. Refer to
Transmission Mount Replacement
.
- Install the engine to transmission mount bolts.
- Install the exhaust brace.
- Install the cooler pipe brace.
- Install the ground wires at the engine to transmission bolt.
- Install the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to
Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement
.
- Apply adhesive/sealant compound GM P/N 12345493, or equivalent
on the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
- Install the converter cover bolts.
- Install the transmission converter cover.
- Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine
Electrical.
- Install the engine to transmission brace.
- Install the drive axles. Refer to Drive Axle In Drive Axle.
- Install the left suspension support. Refer to General Body Construction
in Underbody.
- Install the front air deflector.
- Install the stabilizer shaft links. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft
in Front Suspension.
- Install the lower ball joints. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
- Connect both of the ABS wheel speed sensors. Refer to Front Wheel
Speed Sensor in Antilock Brake System and Enhanced Traction System.
- Install the left splash shield.
- Install the heater core pipe brace nut and the bolt.
- Install both of the tire and the wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel
Removal in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
Important: Install the bolts in the proper location.
- Install the top engine to transmission bolts in their proper location.
- Remove the J 28467-360
from
the transmission.
- Install the filler tube. Refer to Filler Tube and Seal Replacement
.
- Install the power steering pump assembly, and adjust the belt.
Refer to Power Steering Pump Assembly (2.2L).
- Connect the electrical connections.
- Install the vacuum lines.
- Install the shift cable and the bracket. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement
.
- Install the TV cable, if equipped. Refer to
Automatic Transmission Throttle Valve Cable Replacement
.
- Install the intake air duct. Refer to Air Cleaner (2.2L) in Engine
Controls.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Fill the transmission with the proper fluid.
- Adjust the TV cable. Refer to TV Cable Adjustment
.
- Adjust the shift linkage.
