Removal Procedure
Tools Required
- Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle
Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
- Remove the tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the inner splash shield.
- Remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering
Knuckle in Front Suspension.
- Remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball
Joint in Front Suspension.
- Remove the drive axle. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle
Service.
Important: Do not damage the seal bore.
- Remove the seals. Use the J 23129
and the J 6125-1B
.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 34115 Axle Seal
Installer
- Install the new oil seals. Use the J 34115
.
- Lubricate the seal lip with a light wipe of transmission oil.
Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the shaft
splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface because damage may
occur.
- Install the drive axle into the transmission case. Refer to Drive Axle
in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
- Install the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball
Joint in Front Suspension.
- Install the tie rod to the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering
Knuckle in Front Suspension.
- Seat the drive axle into the transmission case. Refer to Drive
Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
- Install the tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Inspect the oil seal for leaks.
- Adjust the oil level.
