Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38868 Shaft Removal Tool
    • J 6125-1B Slide Hammer
    • J 23129 Seal Removal Tool
  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  2. Remove the drive axle assembly. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle.

  3. Object Number: 104554  Size: SH
  4. Remove the snap rings from the stub axle shaft. Discard the snap rings, these are not reusable.
  5. Pull lightly on the shaft. Rotate the shaft until the output shaft snap ring at the differential seats in the taper on the differential side gear.

  6. Object Number: 104556  Size: SH
  7. Remove the stub shaft from the transmission. Use the J 6125-1B and the J 38868 .
  8. Important: Do not damage the seal bore or the sleeve assembly. Fluid leaks may result.

  9. Remove the right hand axle seal from the transmission. Use the J 23129 and the J 6125-1B , or a screwdriver.

Installation Procedure

J 41102-1A Axle Seal Installation Tool


    Object Number: 104557  Size: SH
  1. Install the new seal. Use the J 41102-1A . Lubricate the seal lip with a light wipe of transmission oil.

  2. Object Number: 104554  Size: SH

    Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface, otherwise damage to the seal will occur.

  3. Install the two new snap rings on the stub shaft.

  4. Object Number: 104558  Size: SH
  5. Install the stub shaft into the transmission. Use a mallet.
  6. Install the drive axle assembly. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Inspect the shaft and the seal for leaks.
  9. Check the oil level.
