Removal Procedure

Important: Store the parts in the order that they were removed, so that you can assemble the parts in the same location.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the left or the right front wheel housing panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  3. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  4. Important: If you are only replacing the pushrod, back off the valve rocker arm bolt until you can swing the valve rocker arm away from the pushrod.

  5. Remove the valve rocker arm bolt.
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm with the ball and guide plate.

  8. Remove the push rod from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 202196  Size: SH
  1. Install the push rod into the valve lifters. Ensure that the pushrod seats properly into the valve lifter.
  2. Important: When installing the new valve rocker arms and the balls, coat the bearing surfaces with a high viscosity oil with zinc GM P/N 12345501 or an equivalent.

  3. Install the valve rocker arm with the ball and guide plates.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the valve rocker arm bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 54 N·m (40 lb ft).

  7. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  8. Install the left or the right front wheel housing panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  9. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
