Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38841 Rear Main Seal Installer

Important: A one-piece crankshaft rear oil seal is used on all Mark engines.


    Object Number: 34060  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the transmission assembly from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  3. •  Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission
    •  Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission
  4. Remove the clutch assembly (if equipped) from the flywheel.

  6. Remove the flywheel assembly from the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 55077  Size: SH

    Notice: Take care when removing the rear crankshaft oil seal so as not to nick the crankshaft sealing surface.

  8. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal. Use care not to damage the crankshaft seal surface.
  9. Clean the seal running surface on the crankshaft with a non-abrasive cleaner.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 217136  Size: SH
  1. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal by using the following procedure:
  2. 1.1. Lubricate the inner and the outer diameter of the seal with engine oil.
    1.2. Install the seal on J 38841 .
    1.3. Position J 38841 against the crankshaft.
    1.4. Thread the attaching screws into the tapped holes in the crankshaft.
    1.5. Tighten the screws securely with a socket or a wrench. This will ensure that the seal is installed squarely over the crankshaft.
    1.6. Turn the handle until the handle bottoms.
    1.7. Remove J 38841 .

  3. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 34060  Size: SH
  5. Install the clutch to the crankshaft (if equipped).
  6. Install the transmission assembly in the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

  8. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
