Air Brake Chamber Overhaul Front Air Brake

1. Mark the pressure cap (4) and the chamber assembly (7) in relation to the clamp ring assembly (2).
2. Remove the air brake chamber clevis (5) and the nut (6).
3. Pull out the pushrod (9).
4. Clamp the pushrod (9) using locking-type pliers.
5. Remove the nuts (3) and the bolts (1).



6. Remove the clamp ring assembly.



7. Remove the pressure cap.



8. Release the locking-type pliers from the pushrod.



9. Remove the diaphragm.



10. Remove the pushrod.



11. Remove the return spring.




Important: Replace all worn and/or damaged parts.

12. Inspect the inside of the chamber assembly (7) for corrosion. Replace the chamber assembly (7) if corrosion is found.
13. Inspect the return spring (8).
14. Inspect the pushrod (9).
15. Inspect the clamp ring assembly (2).

1. Install the return spring into the chamber assembly.




Important: Compress the return spring and clamp the pushrod in place with locking-type pliers.

2. Install the pushrod into the chamber assembly.



3. Install the diaphragm into the chamber assembly.



4. Install the pressure cap onto the chamber assembly.



5. Install the clamp ring assembly.




Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Important: Align the marks made during the disassembly.

6. Install the bolts (1) and the nuts (3).

Tighten the nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

7. Release the locking-type pliers.

Important: Loose fit the nut and the air brake chamber clevis to the pushrod. For air brake chamber clevis adjustment refer to one of the following procedures:

8. Install the nut (6) and the air brake chamber clevis (5) to the pushrod (9).

Air Brake Chamber Overhaul Rear Air Brake

The rear air brake chamber identification information is located on the adapter housing. The emergency side of the rear air brake chamber uses a crimped safety seal and is not serviceable.

1. Mark the adapter (10) and the service housing (5) in relation to the clamp ring assembly (3).
2. Remove the air brake chamber clevis and the nut (2).



3. Pull out the pushrod and use locking-type pliers to clamp the pushrod.



4. Remove the nuts and the bolts.
5. Remove the clamp ring assembly.



6. Remove the service housing (5) from the adapter (6).



7. Release the locking-type pliers from the pushrod.



8. Remove the pushrod.



9. Remove the return spring.



10. Remove the diaphragm from the adapter.




Important: Replace all worn and or damaged parts.

11. Inspect the inside of the service housing (5) for corrosion. Replace the service housing (5) if corrosion is found.
12. Inspect the adapter (10) wall and the lip.
13. Inspect the return spring (6).
14. Inspect the pushrod (7).
15. Inspect the clamp ring assembly (3).

1. Install the return spring into the service housing.




Important: Compress the return spring and clamp the pushrod in place with locking-type pliers.

2. Install the pushrod into the service housing.



3. Install the diaphragm into the adapter.



4. Install the service housing (5) onto the adapter (10).




Important: Align the marks made during disassembly.

5. Install the clamp ring assembly.

6. Install the bolts and the nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

7. Inspect the clamp assembly for the proper seating around the adapter and the service housing lip.



8. Release the locking-type pliers.




Important: Loosely fit the nut and the air brake chamber clevis to the pushrod. Refer to Air Brake Chamber Clevis Replacement .

9. Install the nut (2) and the air brake chamber clevis to the pushrod (7).
