Preliminary Inspection
Before performing any major clutch service, make a preliminary inspection
in order to determine if the malfunction is actually the clutch.
| • | Verify that the clutch release bearing travels the required distance
as you depress the clutch pedal, approximately 12.7 mm (0.5 in). |
| • | Inspect the clutch pedal bushing for wear, sticking on the shaft,
and loose mountings. |
| • | Lubricate the pedal linkage with multi-purpose grease or
the equivalent. |
| • | Tighten all of the front and the rear engine mounting bolts, if
necessary. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical. |
Clutch Linkage
Inspect the clutch linkage in order to ensure the clutch release fully,
as follows:
| • | Inspect the pedal bushings for sticking or excessive wear. |
| • | Check the clutch release fork for proper installation. Lubricate
with high temperature grease. |
| | The lack of lubrication on the release fork can cause the fork to be
pulled from the ball stud. |
| • | Inspect for bent, cracked or damaged support brackets. |
| • | Inspect the throw-out bearing and clearance between the
release levers and the release bearing. |
| | Ensure that the clearance between the release levers and the bearing
is 3 mm (0.125 in). |
| | Ensure that the clearance between the release bearing and the bottom
of the transmission front bearing retainer is at least 25.40 mm (1 in).
If no clearance exists, the fork is improperly installed on the ball stud
or the clutch disc is worn. |
