Removal Procedure
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the caliper from the mounting bracket and support the caliper with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement .
- Remove the brake rotor and hub assembly. Refer to Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.
- Press the wheel studs out of the brake rotor and hub assembly.
- Remove the brake rotor from the hub.
Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.
Installation Procedure
- Install the brake rotor to the hub.
- Install the wheel studs into the brake rotor and hub assembly.
- Clean both sides of the brake rotor with Brake Parts Cleaner GM P/N 12345754 (Canadian P/N 993119) or the equivalent.
- Install the brake rotor and hub assembly to the vehicle.
- Inspect the brake rotor for runout after installation. Refer to Brake Rotor Surface and Wear Inspection .
- Install the brake caliper. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement .
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
- Slowly release the brake pedal.
- Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 9-10 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
- Fill the brake master cylinder to the proper level. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling in Hydraulic Brakes.
Notice: Any new rotor must have the protective coating removed from the friction surfaces before being placed in service. Remove the protective coating using denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake cleaner, and wipe the surface clean with clean cloths. Do not use gasoline, kerosene, or other oil base solvents which may leave an oily residue. This residue is damaging to the brake lining and is flammable.
