Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 209279 Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  3. Remove the brake caliper from the mounting bracket and support the caliper with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Replacement .
  4. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .
  5. Remove the bolts securing the splash shield and mounting plate.
  6. Remove the splash shield.
  7. Remove the remaining bolts securing the mounting plate.
  8. Remove the brake caliper mounting plate (1) from the rear axle.
  9. Inspect the support rails for rust, corrosion, and wear.
  10. Clean the support rails with a wire brush.
  11. Inspect the brake caliper mounting plate (1) for cracks or elongated bolt holes.
  12. Replace the mounting plate if necessary.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 209279 Size: SH
  1. Install the brake caliper mounting plate (1) to the rear axle.
  2. Install the splash shield.
  3. Important: Ensure that the threads are clean and greaseless before applying threadlocker.

  4. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or the equivalent, to the threads of each brake caliper mounting plate bolt.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the brake caliper mounting plate bolts.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the brake caliper mounting plate bolts to 220 N·m (162 lb ft).

  8. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .
  9. Install the brake caliper (5). Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement .
  10. Install the tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  13. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  14. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 9-10 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
