Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Rear - 2WD

Tools Required

    • J 8614-01 Pinion Flange Holder
    • J 6125-1B Slide Hammer
    • J 23129 Universal Seal Remover
    • J 45381 Rear Extension Housing Oil Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 775218  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  3. Remove the following components:
  4. 3.1. The main shaft nut
    3.2. The prop shaft yoke washer
    3.3. The main shaft washer
    3.4. The yoke

  5. Remove the rear seal using J 6125-1B (1) and J 23129 (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Using J 45381 install the NEW rear oil seal.

  2. Object Number: 775218  Size: SH
  3. Install the following components:
  4. 2.1. The yoke
    2.2. A NEW main shaft washer
    2.3. A NEW prop shaft yoke washer
    2.4. The main shaft nut

  5. If required, use J 8614-01 in order to keep the keep yoke from rotating.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Tighten the main shaft nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the main shaft nut to 441 N·m (325 lb ft).

  9. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  10. Check the transmission fluid level. Add if necessary.
  11. Lower the vehicle.

J 38801 Input Shaft Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 772346  Size: SH
  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  2. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder bolts.
  3. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder.

  4. Object Number: 761128  Size: SH
  5. Remove the input shaft bearing retainer bolts.
  6. Remove the input shaft bearing retainer.

    Screw two of the removed bolts into the threaded holes in the retainer in order to remove the retainer.

  7. Using a hammer and a punch, remove the transmission housing front oil seal from the input shaft bearing retainer.
  8. Remove the old gasket material from the input shaft bearing retainer.

Installation Procedure

Important: Inspect the input shaft bearing retainer for any nicks or cracks that may result in a leak. Replace as necessary.


    Object Number: 757859  Size: SH
  1. Position a NEW oil seal in the input shaft bearing retainer.
  2. Using J 38801 install the oil seal.

  3. Object Number: 635655  Size: SH
  4. Apply a thin bead of RTV sealer GM P/N 12345739 (Canadian P/N 10953541) or equivalent to the input shaft bearing retainer mating surface.

  5. Object Number: 761128  Size: SH
  6. Position the input shaft bearing retainer.
  7. Align the bearing retainer oil drain hole at the top dead center position.
  8. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or equivalent to the input shaft bearing retainer bolts.
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the input shaft bearing retainer bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the input shaft bearing retainer bolts to 22 N·m (16 lb in).

  12. Install the clutch actuator cylinder and bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the clutch actuator cylinder bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in)

  14. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  15. Lower the vehicle.
