Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Rear - 2WD

Removal Procedure
- Raise and suitably support
the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
or
Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
in Propeller Shaft.
- Remove the following components:
3.2. | The prop shaft yoke washer |
3.3. | The main shaft washer |
- Remove the rear seal using J 6125-1B
(1) and J 23129
(2).
Installation Procedure
- Using J 45381
install the NEW rear oil seal.
- Install the following
components:
2.2. | A NEW main shaft washer |
2.3. | A NEW prop shaft yoke washer |
- If required, use J 8614-01
in order to keep the
keep yoke from rotating.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Tighten the main shaft nut.
Tighten
Tighten the main shaft nut to 441 N·m (325 lb ft).
- Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
or
Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
in Propeller Shaft.
- Check the transmission fluid level. Add if necessary.
- Lower the vehicle.

Seal Installer
Removal Procedure
- Remove the transmission.
Refer to
Transmission Replacement
.
- Remove the clutch actuator cylinder bolts.
- Remove the clutch actuator cylinder.
- Remove the input shaft
bearing retainer bolts.
Remove the input shaft bearing retainer.
Screw two of the removed bolts into the threaded holes in the
retainer in order to remove the retainer.
- Using a hammer and a punch,
remove the transmission housing front oil seal from the input shaft bearing
retainer.
- Remove the old gasket material from the input shaft bearing retainer.
Installation Procedure
Important: Inspect the input shaft bearing retainer for any nicks or cracks that
may result in a leak. Replace as necessary.
- Position a NEW oil seal
in the input shaft bearing retainer.
- Using J 38801
install the oil seal.
- Apply a thin bead of RTV
sealer GM P/N 12345739 (Canadian P/N 10953541) or equivalent
to the input shaft bearing retainer mating surface.
- Position the input shaft
bearing retainer.
- Align the bearing retainer oil drain hole at the top dead center
position.
- Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488)
or equivalent to the input shaft bearing retainer bolts.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring

- Install the input shaft bearing retainer bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the input shaft bearing retainer bolts to 22 N·m
(16 lb in).
- Install the clutch actuator
cylinder and bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the clutch actuator cylinder bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in)
- Install the transmission. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
.
- Lower the vehicle.
