Was the instrument panel cluster (IPC) system check performed?

  1. Properly support the vehicle so that the wheels are off the ground.
  2. With the scan tool select Powertrain, Engine Data, and Data to monitor the vehicle speed.
  3. Start the engine, transmission in gear, wheels spinning.
  4. Compare the vehicle speed on the scan tool to the speed displayed on the speedometer.

Does the scan tool agree with the speedometer?

Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in 4.3L

or Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check for 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L

Go to Step 3

  1. Check for a speed input signal to the cluster by backprobing with a DMM.
  2. Measure the AC voltage between the DK GRN/WHT (817) wire cavity A3 and ground.

Is the AC voltage within the specified range?

2-6.5 VAC (approximately 2-10 MPH)

Go to Step 4

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Check the following items:

  1. The DK GRN/WHT (817) wire for an open circuit between the cluster to the VCM/PCM.
  2. The DK GRN/WHT (817) wire for a short to ground between the cluster to the VCM/PCM.
  3. The DK GRN/WHT (817) wire for a short to battery between the cluster to the VCM/PCM.
  4. All electrical connectors for proper matting.
  5. Repair any problem found.
