Was the instrument panel cluster (IPC) system check performed?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position, engine NOT running.
  2. With the scan tool, select the instrument panel cluster, special functions, and IPC gauges. Command the fuel gauge UP and DOWN. The gauge should be at or near E when commanded DOWN and at or near F when commanded UP.

Does the gauge operate properly when commanded with the scan tool?

  1. With the scan tool select data display, data.
  2. Compare the monitored fuel level to the amount of fuel known to be in the tank.

Does the scan tool approximately agree with the known amount of fuel in the tank?

Go to Step 4

Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check for 4.3L

or Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check for 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L

With the scan tool compare monitored fuel level and the displayed fuel level.

Are the two fuel levels displayed approximately the same value?
