Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36857 Engine Lift Bracket

  1. Remove the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Interior Trim.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the coolant reservoir. Refer to Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the front bumper.
  7. Remove the grill. Refer to Sheet Metal.
  8. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  9. Remove the radiator support as an assembly. The radiator support assembly consists of the following components:
  10. 9.1. The two ground straps.
    9.2. The headlights.
    9.3. The radiator.
    9.4. The A/C condenser.
  11. Remove the heater hoses from the engine.
  12. Remove the engine wiring harness and the connectors.
  13. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  14. Remove the engine oil fill tube.
  15. Remove the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  16. Remove the accelerator and the cruise control linkages (if equipped).
  17. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  18. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  19. Remove the fuel supply lines at the rear of the engine.
  20. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  21. Remove the engine oil level indicator tube.
  22. Remove the transmission oil level indicator tube.
  23. Remove the transmission shift cable connector.
  24. Raise the vehicle and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  25. Remove the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Engine Exhaust.
  26. Remove the engine cooler lines from the retaining brackets.
  27. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  28. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
  29. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  30. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32. Install a length of chain, using GM P/N 23503910 or equivalent attaching bolt, to the rear of the right cylinder head and the front of the left cylinder head.
  33. Support the transmission with a strap between the frame rails.
  34. Install the suitable lifting device to the engine.
  35. Remove the front engine mount through bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement and Engine Mount Replacement .
  36. Remove the engine.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine in the vehicle.
  2. Install the engine mount through bolts and the nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement and Engine Mount Replacement .
  3. Install the transmission bolts to the engine.
  4. Remove the lifting fixture, the chain and bolts.
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  6. Install the flywheel to the torque converter. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  7. Install the flywheel cover.
  8. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  9. Install the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Engine Exhaust.
  10. Install the engine cooler lines to the retaining brackets.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  13. Install the fuel supply lines to the bracket and the fuel rail.
  14. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  15. Install the accelerator and the cruise control linkages.
  16. Install the transmission shift cable connector.
  17. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube.
  18. Install the engine oil level indicator tube.
  19. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  20. Install the engine oil fill tube.
  21. Connect the engine wiring harness and the connectors.
  22. Install the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  23. Install the engine cooling fan.
  24. Install the heater hoses.
  25. Install the radiator support as an assembly.
  26. Install the grille.
  27. Install the coolant reservoir.
  28. Install the front bumper.
  29. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  30. Install the engine cover.
  31. Install the battery.
  32. Install the proper quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System Engine Cooling.
  33. Charge the A/C system. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  34. Install the proper quantity and grade of engine oil. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication.
