Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 36857 Engine Lift
Bracket
- Remove the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the engine cover. Refer to Interior Trim.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling
System in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the coolant reservoir. Refer to Engine Cooling.
- Remove the front bumper.
- Remove the grill. Refer to Sheet Metal.
- Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Heating, Ventilation,
and Air Conditioning.
- Remove the radiator support as an assembly. The radiator support
assembly consists of the following components:

- Remove the heater hoses from the engine.
- Remove the engine wiring harness and the connectors.
- Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the engine oil fill tube.
- Remove the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement
in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
- Remove the accelerator and the cruise control linkages (if equipped).
- Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Remove the fuel supply lines at the rear of the engine.
- Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine
Electrical.
- Remove the engine oil level indicator tube.
- Remove the transmission oil level indicator tube.
- Remove the transmission shift cable connector.
- Raise the vehicle and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General
Information.
- Remove the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Engine
Exhaust.
- Remove the engine cooler lines from the retaining brackets.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement in Engine
Electrical.
- Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
- Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Automatic
Transmission.
- Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install a length of chain, using GM P/N 23503910
or equivalent attaching bolt, to the rear of the right cylinder head and the
front of the left cylinder head.
- Support the transmission with a strap between the frame rails.
- Install the suitable lifting device to the engine.
- Remove the front engine mount through bolts. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement

- Remove the engine.
Installation Procedure
- Install the engine in the vehicle.
- Install the engine mount through bolts and the nuts. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement
and
Engine Mount Replacement
.
- Install the transmission bolts to the engine.
- Remove the lifting fixture, the chain and bolts.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
- Install the flywheel to the torque converter. Refer to Automatic
Transmission.
- Install the flywheel cover.
- Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement in Engine
Electrical.
- Install the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Engine
Exhaust.
- Install the engine cooler lines to the retaining brackets.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Install the fuel supply lines to the bracket and the fuel rail.
- Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Install the accelerator and the cruise control linkages.
- Install the transmission shift cable connector.
- Install the transmission oil level indicator tube.
- Install the engine oil level indicator tube.
- Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine
Electrical.
- Install the engine oil fill tube.
- Connect the engine wiring harness and the connectors.
- Install the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement
in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
- Install the engine cooling fan.
- Install the heater hoses.
- Install the radiator support as an assembly.
- Install the grille.
- Install the coolant reservoir.
- Install the front bumper.
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Install the engine cover.
- Install the battery.
- Install the proper quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Draining
and Filling Cooling System Engine Cooling.
- Charge the A/C system. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air
Conditioning.
- Install the proper quantity and grade of engine oil. Refer to
Maintenance and Lubrication.
