Remove Procedure

Notice: Perform TDC Offset Recovery procedure if the timing chain, timing gears, engine front cover, crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft or other components affecting the timing are replaced.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cables. Refer to

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

    in General Information.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to HVAC.
  4. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Interior Trim.
  5. Remove the coolant reservoir.
  6. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  7. Remove the parking lamp assembly. Refer to Sheet Metal and Fiberglass.
  8. Remove the grille. Refer to Sheet Metal and Fiberglass.
  9. Remove the radiator support. Refer to Sheet Metal and Fiberglass.
  10. Remove the radiator and air conditioning condenser as an assembly. Refer to HVAC.
  11. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  12. Remove the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  13. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  14. Remove the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  15. Remove the front engine mount through bolts. The front of the engine may need to be raised to pull the camshaft out of the block.
  16. Notice: When raising or supporting the engine for any reason, do not use a jack under the oil pan, any sheet metal, or the crankshaft pulley. Due to the small clearance between the oil pan and the oil pump screen, jacking against the oil pan may cause the pan to be bent against the pump screen. This will result in a damaged oil pickup unit.

  21. Clean, inspect, repair or replace the camshaft and related components.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 60263 Size: SH
  1. Whenever a new camshaft is installed, replace all valve lifters, engine oil, and oil filter.
  2. Install the spacer with the chamfer towards the camshaft.
  3. Install the camshaft using the following procedure:
  4. 3.1. Coat the camshaft lobes with camshaft and valve lifter Pre Lube GM P/N 1052365 or equivalent.
3.2. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals with engine oil.
3.3. Insert the camshaft carefully into the block in order to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.
  5. Install the thrust plate and bearing.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the front engine mount through bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  8. Important: Align the timing marks.

  9. Install the timing chain and sprockets.
  10. Notice: Perform TDC Offset Recovery procedure if the timing chain, timing gears, engine front cover, crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft or other components affecting the timing are replaced.

  11. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  12. Install the valve lifters in the same bore from which they were removed.
  13. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  14. Install the valve rocker arm assemblies and pushrods in their original locations.
  15. Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  16. Install the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  17. Install the power steering pump and bracket.
  18. Install the generator and bracket.
  19. Instal the air conditioning compressor and bracket, if equipped.
  20. Install the engine cooling fan.
  21. Install the radiator and air conditioning condenser (if equipped) as an assembly.
  22. Install the radiator support.
  23. Install the grille and parking lamp assembly.
  24. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  25. Install the coolant reservoir.
  26. Install the negative battery cables.
