Removal Procedure
Notice: If the engine is damaged internally and a new engine assembly is installed
in the vehicle, flush all foreign material from the cooling system and the
oil cooler system. Severe engine damage may occur if debris is not removed.
- Disconnect the battery negative cable assembly from the battery
negative terminal. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.

- Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover in Interior Trim.
- Remove the coolant reservoir. Refer to
- Remove the air cleaner assembly and intake duct.
- Remove the grille assembly. Refer to Radiator Grille in Sheet
Metal.
- Evacuate the A/C system. Refer to Station ACR4 Setup and Maintenance
in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
- Remove the radiator support assembly (complete). The radiator
support assembly will include:
• | A/C condenser, if equipped |
- Remove the front bumper.
- Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine
Cooling.
- Remove the heater hoses at the engine.
- Remove the engine wiring harness and connectors.
- Remove the throttle and cruise control cables (if equipped).
- Remove the air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to Compressor
in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
- Remove the generator and bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Remove the fuel lines and bracket at the rear of the engine.
- Remove the transmission oil level indicator tube.
- Remove the transmission shift cable connector.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
- Support the vehicle with safety stands.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifolds. Refer to
Removing Exhaust Parts in Exhaust System.
- Remove the engine oil cooling lines from the retaining blocks,
if equipped.
- Remove the flywheel cover.
- Remove the torque converter from the flywheel.
- Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor in Cranking Systems.
- Remove the engine oil cooling lines from the transmission.
- Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install a length of chain, using GM P/N 23503910
or the equivalent attaching bolt, to the rear of the left cylinder head.
• | Support the transmission with a strap between the frame rails. |
• | Attach a suitable lifting device to the chain. |
- Remove the engine mounting through-bolts.
- Remove the mounts from the engine and the frame.
- Remove the engine.
Installation Procedure
- Install the engine into the vehicle.
- Install the front mounts to the engine and frame. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement
.
- Install the engine mounting through-bolts and nuts. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement
.
- Install the transmission bolts to the engine.
• | Remove the lifting device. |
- Install the torque converter to the flywheel.
- Install the flywheel cover.
- Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor in Cranking Systems.
- Install the engine oil cooler lines to the retainers.
- Install the transmission oil cooler lines to the retainers.
- Install the exhaust pipes to the manifolds. Refer to Installing
Exhaust Parts in Exhaust System.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Install the fuel lines from the rear bracket to the intake manifold.
- Install the generator and bracket.
- Install the air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to
Compressor in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
- Install the accelerator and cruise control cables (if equipped).
- Install the heater hoses to the engine.
- Install the transmission shift cable connector.
- Install the transmission oil level indicator tube.
- Install the engine wiring harness and connectors.
- Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine
Cooling.
- Install the radiator support assembly complete. The radiator support
assembly will include:
• | A/C condenser, if equipped. |
- Install the grille assembly. Refer to Radiator Grille in Sheet
Metal.
- Install the front bumper. Refer to Front Bumper in Frame and Bumpers.
- Install the air cleaner assembly and intake duct.
- Install the coolant reservoir. Refer to Coolant Reservoir Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover in Interior Trim.
- Connect the battery negative cable assembly to the battery negative terminal.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
- Fill the engine with the proper quantity and grade of engine oil.

- Fill the cooling system with the proper quantity and type of coolant.
