Removal Procedure

CAUTION:: If the actuator will not hold pressure, do not unthread the parking brake cable from the actuator piston. The cable is under tension and unthreading the cable will cause the cable to spring and can result in personal injury.

  1. With the vehicle in neutral, turn the ignition to the ON position to release the pressure from the parking brake. Once the cable is disconnected as follows, shift the vehicle into the park (P) position and turn the ignition to the OFF position.

  2. Object Number: 258718 Size: SH
  3. Unscrew the cable end from the cable actuator stud collar, if the actuator holds pressure. Otherwise, carefully cut the parking brake cable with a bolt cutter.
  4. Close the cable retaining clip and remove the cable from the cable support.

  5. Object Number: 258757 Size: SH
  6. Remove the cotter pin (1) and the clevis pin (2).
  7. Remove the clevis (3) of the cable assembly from the bellcrank (4).

  8. Object Number: 258716 Size: SH
  9. Remove the bolt and washer from the cable-to-transmission retaining bracket.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 258757 Size: SH
  1. Position the cable to the top of the transmission and position cable in the transmission-to-cable retaining bracket and loosely tighten the bracket bolt.
  2. Attach one end of the cable to the clevis (3) and engage the threads until flush with the U-opening on the clevis.
  3. Lubricate the clevis with GM No.2, High Temperature Grease (9985254).
  4. Install the clevis pin (2) and the cotter pin (1).

  5. Object Number: 258716 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Secure the cable assembly to the transmission.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the bolt with washer of the cable retaining bracket to 31 N·m (23 lb ft).

    Object Number: 258718 Size: SH
  8. Install the cable retainer to the actuator cable support and open the retainer.
  9. Install the jamb nut on the actuator rod to maximum thread engagement (30 mm or 1.18 in) on the actuator rod. The actuator must be engaged to the fully extended thread rod.
  10. Run down the collar nut on the cable up to the jamb nut.
  11. Tighten the cable jamb nut.
  12. Tighten
Tighten the jamb nut by hand to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  13. Turn the ignition to the OFF position and check the park brake holding ability for proper operation.
  14. Adjust the parking brake if the brake pressure is too tight or loose. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment , steps 9 thru 19.
