CAUTION:: If the actuator will not hold pressure, do not unthread the parking
brake cable from the actuator piston. The cable is under tension and unthreading
the cable will cause the cable to spring and can result in personal
injury.
- Before beginning this adjustment, the parking brake linings wear measurement
must be made in case they need replacement. Refer to
Parking Brake Shoe Inspection
.
- Block the vehicle wheels.
- With the vehicle in the neutral (N) position, turn the ignition
switch to the ON position and check the parking brake for proper holding ability.
Important: If adjustment is required, make sure the actuator assembly is in the
fully released position and the actuator jamb nut was tightened to maximum
thread engagement (30 mm or 1.18 in) or bottoms out on the actuator rod.
If the jamb nut and collar are not in the proper position on the actuator
rod, ensure that they are readjusted to their proper position.
- Tighten the jamb nut to its proper torque and position.
Tighten
Tighten the jamb nut by hand to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
- If installing a new park brake cable, refer to
Park Brake Cable Replacement
.
- Check the parking brake holding ability.
- If the parking brake is
too tight or loose, remove the cotter pin (1) to the clevis.
- Remove the clevis pin (2).
- Slide the clevis from the bellcrank (4).
- Move the clevis assembly (3) away from the bellcrank (4).
- Move the bellcrank (4) with sufficient force to take up the clearance
between the linings and the drum.
- With the lever in the applied position, adjust the clevis (3)
in or out in order to align the clevis with the holes in the lever. Minimum
thread engagement is 14 mm (0.55 in).
- Install the clevis (3) to the cable. Make sure the cable extension
has bottomed out at the clevis so it does not interfere with the operations
of the crank.
- Lubricate the clevis and pin with GM No. 2, High Temperature Grease
(9985254).
- Install the clevis pin (2) and the cotter pin (1)
- Install the clevis (3) and cotter (1) pins to secure the bellcrank
(4).
- Apply the parking brake and note the holding ability.
- Repeat the adjustment procedure if necessary.
- Remove the wheel blocks.
