Removal Procedure

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the valve rocker arm covers from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  5. Important: If the push rod is the only item to be replaced, loosen the valve rocker arm bolt until the valve rocker arm can be rotated so the push rod can be removed.

  6. Remove the valve rocker arm bolt from the cylinder head.

  7. Object Number: 64539  Size: SH
  8. Remove the valve rocker arm and guide from the cylinder head.
  9. Important: Store the valve train components in order so that the components can be reassembled in the same location.

  10. Remove the pushrod from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

Important: Make sure that the pushrod is properly seated in the valve lifter.

  1. Install the pushrod into the engine block.
  2. Important: When a new valve rocker arm and balls are installed, coat the bearing surfaces with clean engine oil GM P/N 12345501.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the valve rocker arm bolt to the cylinder head.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten The bolts to 54 N·m (40 N·mlb ft).

  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  6. Connect the battery negative to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical..
  7. Close the hood.
