Preliminary Overheating Diagnostic Check

Caution: Under pressure, the temperature of the solution in the radiator can be considerably higher, without boiling. Removing the radiator cap while the engine is hot (pressure is high), will cause the solution to boil instantaneously, with explosive force. The solution will spew out over the engine, fenders, and the person removing the cap. Serious bodily injury may result. Flammable antifreeze, such as alcohol, is not recommended for use at any time. Flammable antifreeze could cause a serious fire.

Caution: Do not remove the surge tank cap in order to check the engine coolant level. Check the coolant visually at the surge tank. Add coolant to the surge tank only when the system cools.

  1. Does overheating occur while pulling a trailer?
  2. • Is the trailer within the recommended towing payload?
    • Is the vehicle equipped with a heavy duty cooling package?
  3. Is the vehicle equipped with an add-on, or aftermarket, air conditioning system? If so, was a heavy duty radiator installed?
  4. Is overheating occurring after prolonged idle in gear with the A/C system operating?
  5. Is overheating occurring after prolonged driving in slow city traffic, or traffic jams?

If any of the above conditions apply, instruct the operator on driving techniques that would reduce the possibility of engine overheating.

If none of the above conditions apply, refer to Engine Overheating .
