Removal Procedure
Tools Required
- Remove the rocker arms and pushrod at cylinder in order to service.
Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Replacement
.
- Remove the spark plug at the cylinder to be serviced.
Caution: The piston should be placed at BDC before you apply compressed
air to the cylinder head. This may cause the engine to rotate and result in
personal injury.
- Install the J 22794
to the spark plug hole.
Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
- Compress the valve spring using the J 5892-D
.
- Remove the valve stem keys (2).
- Remove the valve spring cap (3).
- Remove the valve spring (4).
- Remove the valve stem oil seal (5).
- Leave the shim (6) in place. If the shim is removed, return it
to its original location.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
- Install the valve stem oil seal (5) and seat the seal against the valve spring
guide.
- Install the valve spring (4).
- Install the valve spring cap (3).
- Use the J 5892-D
in order to compress the valve spring.
- Install the valve stem keys (2). Use grease in order to hold the
keys in place while disconnecting the J 5892-D
.
- Remove the J 22794
. Ensure that the keys seat properly in the upper groove of the valve
stem.
- Tap the end of the stem (1) with a plastic-faced hammer in order
to seat the keys, if necessary.
- Install the spark plug.
Tighten
Tighten the spark plug to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the valve rocker arms and valve pushrods. Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Replacement
.
