Removal Procedure

No service parts are available for valve lifter internal components. Replace the valve lifters if they are worn or when you install a new camshaft.

Tools Required

    • J 3049-A Hydraulic Valve Lifter Remover (Plier Type)
    • J 9290-01 Hydraulic Valve Lifter Remover (Hammer Type)
  1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  2. Remove the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  3. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 11508  Size: SH
  5. Remove the valve lifter guide retainer bolts.
  6. Remove the valve lifter retainer.
  7. Important: Some valve lifters may be stuck in their bores because of gum or varnish deposits. Use the J 3049-A or the J 9290-01 in order to remove the valve lifters.

  8. Remove the valve lifter guides.
  9. Remove the valve lifters.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the valve lifter rollers with prelube, GM P/N 1052365 or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 11509  Size: SH
  3. Install the valve lifters in the same location from which you removed them.
  4. Install the valve lifter guides.

  5. Object Number: 11508  Size: SH
  6. Install the valve lifter retainer.
  7. Install the valve lifter guide retainer bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the valve lifter guide retainer bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Replacement .
  10. Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  11. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
