Removal Procedure
Important:
• | A dual mass flywheel will produce a clacking noise if the engine
has rough idle. Before replacing the flywheel due to a noise complaint, check
the engine for misfiring, or rough operation at idle. |
• | Rotate the primary flywheel against the secondary flywheel for
a limited distance by hand in order to check for looseness. |
• | This looseness does not impair the function of the flywheel, unless
it exceeds the specifications in the measuring procedure that follows. |
- Remove the clutch pressure plate and the clutch disc. Refer to
Clutch Pressure and Driven Plate Replacement
.
Measuring Procedure
In order to measure for excessive looseness of the dual mass flywheel
complete the following procedure:
- Install 2 of the bolts used to retain the pressure plate to the flywheel across
from each other in the secondary flywheel.
- Rotate the secondary flywheel by hand, using the bolts to help
rotate the secondary flywheel against the primary flywheel clockwise until
all looseness is removed.
- Release the flywheel and draw a mark on the secondary and primary flywheels.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3, only rotate the secondary flywheel counterclockwise.
- Measure the distance between the marks. If the measurement exceeds
35 mm (1.378 in.), replace the flywheel assembly. Refer to
Engine Flywheel Replacement
Installation Procedure
- Install the clutch pressure plate and the clutch disc. Refer to
Clutch Pressure and Driven Plate Replacement
.
