Removal Procedure

Tools Required

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Place a drain pan under the vehicle and the drain fluid.

  4. Remove the intermediate shaft shield.

  6. Disconnect the power steering pump inlet hose (2) from the power steering gear.

  7. Object Number: 65353  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the power steering cooler from the gear.
  9. Remove the power steering cooler from the vehicle.

  11. Disconnect the lower steering coupling from the power steering gear.

  12. Object Number: 65352  Size: SH
  13. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  14. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  15. Disconnect both outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Outer Tie Rod End .
  16. Disconnect the electrical connector for MAGNASTEER.

  18. Disconnect both of the stabilizer bar links from the lower control arms. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement (RWD) in Front Suspension.
  19. Remove the stabilizer bar from the crossmember.

  21. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
  22. Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 65352  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering gear into the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.
  2. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the steering gear mounting nuts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the stabilizer bar onto the crossmember.
  5. Connect both of the stabilizer bar links onto the lower control arms. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement (RWD) in Front Suspension.

  6. Object Number: 65352  Size: SH
  7. Connect both outer tie rods to the knuckles. Refer to Outer Tie Rod End .
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the outer tie rod nut to the knuckle to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  9. Connect the lower steering coupling onto the power steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  10. Connect the electrical connector for MAGNASTEER.

  11. Object Number: 65353  Size: SH
  12. Install the power steering cooler onto the crossmember.
  13. Connect the power steering cooler to the power steering gear.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering cooler fitting to the power steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  15. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power steering gear.
  16. Hold the hose against the steering gear while tightening the fitting

    Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear inlet hose fitting to the power steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  17. Install the intermediate shaft shield onto the shaft yoke.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft shield clamp to 3.5 N·m (32 lb in).

  19. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Tires and Wheels.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to

  22. Remove the drain pan, refill the power steering fluid reservoir, and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  23. Check and adjust the front wheel toe setting. Refer to Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
