Tools Required

J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor

1. Remove the snap ring and SIR coil assembly. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .
2. Let the SIR coil assembly hang freely.
3. Remove the wave washer (2).



4. Compress the shaft lock shield (2) using J 23653-SIR .
5. Remove the retaining ring (1).
6. Remove the J 23653-SIR from the shaft lock shield (2).
7. Remove the shaft lock shield (2).



8. Remove the two pan head tapping screws.
9. Remove the electronic column lock from the steering column housing.

1. Install the electronic column lock from the steering column housing.
2. Install the two pan head tapping screws.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Tighten
Tighten the pan head tapping screws to 6.0-8.0 N·m (53-71 lb in).




3. Install the shaft lock shield (2).
4. Compress the shaft lock shield assembly (2) using J 23653-SIR .
5. Install a new retaining ring (1).
6. Remove the J 23653-SIR from the shaft lock shield (2).



7. Install the wave washer (2) to the steering column shaft (1).
8. Install the SIR coil assembly and snap ring. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .
