Tools Required

J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor

1. Remove the snap ring and SIR coil assembly. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .
2. Let the SIR coil assembly hang freely.
3. Remove the wave washer (3).



4. Compress the shaft lock shield (2) using J 23653-SIR .
5. Remove the retaining ring (1).
6. Remove the J 23653-SIR from the shaft lock shield (2).



7. Remove the shaft lock shield (5).
8. Remove the cancel cam assembly (4).
9. Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
10. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (2).
11. Remove the inner race (1).

Tools Required

J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor

1. Apply grease to the following areas:

•	The upper shaft.

•	The inner race (1).

•	The backside of the cancel cam assembly (4).




2. Install the inner race (1).
3. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (2).
4. Install the upper bearing spring (3).
5. Install the cancel cam assembly (4).
6. Install the shaft lock shield assembly (5).



7. Compress the shaft lock shield assembly (2) using J 23653-SIR .
8. Install a new retaining ring (1).
9. Remove the J 23653-SIR from the shaft lock shield (2).



10. Install the wave washer (2) to the steering column shaft (1).
11. Install the SIR coil assembly and snap ring. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .
