Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the
Fuel Pressure Relief
.
Caution: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a
hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- For automatic transmission-equipped vehicles only, lower the left
muffler. Refer to
Exhaust Muffler Replacement - Left Side
or
Exhaust Muffler Replacement - Right Side
in Engine Exhaust.
- Clean all the fuel filter and pressure regulator connections,
and clean the surrounding areas before disconnecting the fuel pipes in order
to avoid possible fuel system contamination.
- Disconnect the fuel feed pipe quick-connect fitting (1)
from the fuel filter and pressure regulator (2). Refer to
Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
.
- Disconnect the fuel return pipe quick-connect fitting (4)
from the fuel filter/pressure regulator (2). Refer to
Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
.
- Remove the fuel filter
and pressure regulator bracket mount nut (2).
- Disconnect the fuel feed
pipe (3) from the outlet side of the fuel filter and pressure regulator (2).
Refer to
Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
.
- Remove the fuel filter/pressure
regulator and bracket (1) from the stud (3).
- Cap the fuel pipes in order to prevent possible fuel system contamination.
- Disconnect the fuel system ground strap.
- Remove the fuel and pressure regulator from the bracket.
Installation Procedure
- Remove the protective
caps from the new fuel filter/pressure regulator.
- Install the new plastic quick connector retainers on the fuel
filter and pressure regulator tubes. Install the new retainers in the same
positions as on the old fuel filter and pressure regulator.
- Install the fuel filter and pressure regulator into the bracket.
- Connect the fuel system ground strap.
- Remove the caps from the fuel pipes.
- Connect the fuel feed pipe (3) to the outlet side of the
fuel filter/pressure regulator (2). Refer to
Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
.
- Install the fuel filter/pressure
regulator and the bracket (1) to the mounting stud (3).
- Engage the anti-rotation
tab (3) of the fuel filter/pressure regulator bracket (2) into
the hole of the tunnel reinforcement (1).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the fuel filter/pressure regulator bracket nut (2).
Tighten
Tighten the fuel filter/pressure regulator bracket nut to 5 N·m
(44 lb in).
- Connect the fuel return
pipe quick-connect fitting (4) to the fuel filter/pressure regulator (2).
Refer to
Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
.
- Connect the fuel feed pipe quick-connect fitting (1) to
the fuel filter/pressure regulator (2). Refer to
Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
.
- Raise the left muffler, for automatic transmission- equipped vehicles
only. Refer to
Exhaust Muffler Replacement - Left Side
or
Exhaust Muffler Replacement - Right Side
in Engine Exhaust.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Tighten the fuel filler cap.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Inspect for leaks.
