    • J 42137 Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor Adapter

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 293252  Size: SH
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Important: Let the SIR coil hang freely after removal.

  3. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.
  4. Remove the wave washer (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  5. Object Number: 338052  Size: SH
  6. Compress the cam orientation plate using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .
  7. Remove the bearing retainer from the steering shaft assembly.
  8. Remove J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .
  9. Dispose of the bearing retainer.

  11. Remove the cam orientation plate (5) from the steering shaft assembly.
  12. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) from the steering shaft assembly.
  13. Remove the upper bearing spring (3) from the steering shaft assembly.
  14. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (2) from the steering shaft assembly.
  15. Remove the inner race (1) from the steering shaft assembly.

  17. Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly only. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washers.
  18. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
  19. Slide the signal switch bracket off of the steering column shaft assembly.
  20. Remove the steering shaft and tilt head housing as an assembly. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket Replacement .
  21. Remove the tilt head housing from the steering shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the tilt head housing onto the steering shaft.
  2. Install the steering shaft and tilt head housing as an assembly. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 664269  Size: SH

    Important: The switch mounting bracket must be pressed firmly against the steering column tilt head in order for the screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly screws to line up.

  4. Slide the turn signal switch bracket onto the steering column.
  5. Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  6. Slide the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly into the signal switch housing. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washers.
  7. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 677939  Size: SH
  9. Lubricate the inner race (1) with GM P/N 12345819 (Canadian P/N 10953516).
  10. Install the inner race (1) onto the steering shaft assembly.
  11. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (2) onto the steering shaft assembly.
  12. Install the upper bearing spring (3) onto the steering shaft assembly.
  13. Lubricate the lower brass surface of the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) with GM P/N 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529).
  14. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) onto the steering shaft assembly.
  15. Install the cam orientation plate (5) onto the steering shaft assembly.

  17. Compress the cam orientation plate using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .
  18. Firmly seat the new bearing retainer into the groove on the steering shaft assembly.
  19. Remove J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .

  20. Object Number: 293252  Size: SH
  21. Install the wave washer (1) to the steering shaft assembly (2).
  22. Perform the functional test if equipped with manual transmission or automatic transmission-Europe only. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Spring Replacement, steps 6-26.
  23. Install the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.
  24. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
