Diagnostic Aids

The lumbar pump and control module are separate units that are attached to each other by a wire harness and a hose. They are serviced as an assembly.

Attempt to inflate and deflate the seat bolster and lumbar support bladders.

Does the lumbar support system operate as described in the system description and operation?

Is the lumbar pump motor always ON?

Are all of the lumbar support functions inoperative?

Go to Step 9

Press the INFLATE switch for the inoperative lumbar support or seat bolster function.

Does the lumbar pump motor run?

Go to Step 6

Does the inoperative lumbar or seat bolster bladder inflate and stay inflated?

Go to Step 7

  1. Disconnect the lumbar pump/control module assembly.
  2. Probe the appropriate lumbar or seat bolster deflate control circuit of the lumbar control module with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
  3. Press the appropriate lumbar DEFLATE switch.

Does the test lamp Illuminate?

Go to Step 17

  1. Disconnect the lumbar pump/control module assembly.
  2. Probe the seat bolster and lumbar inflate control circuits of the lumbar control module with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp Illuminate for either circuit?

Go to Step 18

Probe the battery positive voltage circuit of the lumbar control module with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 10

Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the lumbar control module and the ground circuit of the lumbar control module.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 11

  1. Probe one of the lumbar control circuits of the lumbar control module with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
  2. Press the appropriate lumbar switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 20

  1. Disconnect the lumbar pump/control module assembly.
  2. Probe the inoperative lumbar or bolster inflate control circuit of the lumbar control module with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
  3. Press the appropriate INFLATE switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the lumbar pump/control module assembly.
  2. Probe the inoperative lumbar or seat bolster deflate control circuit of the lumbar control module with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the deflate control circuit of the inoperative lumbar or seat bolster function for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Perform a mechanical inspection of the lumbar pump/control module assembly and bladders for the following conditions:

    • Air leaks
    • Pinched air lines
    • A blocked exhaust port

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the lumbar pump/control module assembly. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Wiring Repairs .

Repair the high resistance or an open in the ground circuit of the lumbar pump/control module assembly. Refer to Wiring Repairs .
