Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
.
Important: Let the SIR coil hang freely after removal.
- Remove the SIR coil. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement
.
- Remove the wave washer (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).
- Compress the cam orientation plate using
J 23653-SIR
and
J 42137
.
- Remove the bearing retainer from the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove
J 23653-SIR
and
J 42137
.
- Dispose of the bearing retainer.
- Remove the cam orientation plate (5) from the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) from the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove the upper bearing spring (3) from the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (2) from the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove the inner race (1) from the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly only. Refer to
Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement
.
- Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to
Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement
.
- Slide the signal switch bracket off of the steering column shaft assembly.
- Remove the steering shaft and tilt head housing as an assembly. Refer to
Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket Replacement
.
- Remove the tilt head housing from the steering shaft.
Installation Procedure
- Install the tilt head housing onto the steering shaft.
- Install the steering shaft and tilt head housing as an assembly. Refer to
Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket Replacement
.
Important: The switch mounting bracket must be pressed firmly against the steering column tilt head in order for the screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly screws to line up.
- Slide the turn signal switch bracket onto the steering column.
Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable
restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of
the coil, which may cause personal injury.
- Slide the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly into the signal switch housing. Refer to
Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement
.
- Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to
Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement
.
- Lubricate the inner race (1) with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516).
- Install the inner race (1) onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Install the upper bearing inner race seat (2) onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Install the upper bearing spring (3) onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Lubricate the lower brass surface of the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) with GM P/N 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529).
- Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Install the cam orientation plate (5) onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Install the new bearing retainer onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Compress the cam orientation plate using
J 23653-SIR
and
J 42137
.
- Firmly seat the bearing retainer into the groove on the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove
J 23653-SIR
and
J 42137
.
- Install the wave washer (1) to the steering shaft assembly (2).
- Install the SIR coil. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement
.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
.

- Lubricate the lower brass surface of the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) with GM P/N 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529).
- Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Install the cam orientation plate (5) onto the steering shaft assembly.
- Compress the cam orientation plate using
J 23653-SIR
and
J 42137
.
- Firmly seat the new bearing retainer into the groove on the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove

and
J 42137
.
- Install the wave washer (1) to the steering shaft assembly (2).
