Front Brake Caliper Replacement JL9, J55

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Warning in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  6. Object Number: 63952  Size: SH
  7. Remove the brake caliper inlet fitting bolt from the caliper.
  8. Remove the brake hose from the brake caliper.
  9. Remove and discard the 2 copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.
  10. Plug the opening in the brake caliper and the brake hose to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

  12. Remove the brake caliper guide pin bolts.
  13. Remove the brake caliper from the caliper mounting bracket.

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect the caliper slide boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, replace the slides and the boots. Refer to Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 63984  Size: SH
  3. Install the brake caliper to the caliper mounting bracket.
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Install the brake caliper guide pin bolts and tighten to  31 N·m (23 lb ft).

  6. Object Number: 63952  Size: SH
  7. Remove the plug from the brake caliper opening and the brake hose.
  8. Note: Install NEW copper brake hose gaskets.

  9. Assemble the NEW copper brake hose gaskets, and the brake caliper inlet fitting bolt to the brake hose.
  10. Install the brake hose and the brake caliper inlet fitting bolt to the brake caliper and tighten to  40 N·m (30 lb ft).
  11. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  12. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

Preliminary Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Remove the brake hose from the brake caliper. Refer to Front Brake Hose Replacement.

Brake Caliper Bolt (Qty: 2)

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

Tighten
175 N·m (129 lb ft).

Caliper

Procedure

  1. If removing the caliper to service the brake system, support the caliper with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.
  2. Plug the brake hose fitting to prevent brake fluid leakage and contamination.
  3. Remove the brake pads. Refer to Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement.

Front Brake Caliper Replacement J57

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.

Warning: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Warning in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Caution: Disc brake rotor protectors MUST be installed prior to tire and wheel assembly removal to avoid ceramic brake rotor damage due to contact between the tire and wheel assembly and the rotor. If the ceramic brake rotor is damaged replacement may be required.

  3. Install the disc brake rotor protectors and remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  4. Remove the disc brake pads. Refer to Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement.

  5. Object Number: 2144496  Size: SH
  6. Remove the brake hose fitting bolt (1).
  7. Note: Do not reuse the brake hose fitting gaskets.

  8. Remove and discard the brake hose fitting gaskets (2) from the brake hose (3).
  9. Cap the brake hose fitting to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  10. Object Number: 2144499  Size: SH
  11. Remove the brake caliper bolts (1).

  12. Object Number: 2144501  Size: SH
  13. Remove the brake caliper (1).
  14. Inspect the brake caliper for brake fluid leakage, damage to the dust boots and pistons and replace, if necessary. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Overhaul.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 2144501  Size: SH
  1. Install the brake caliper (1).
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 2144499  Size: SH
  3. Install the brake caliper bolts (1) and tighten to  175 N·m (129 lb ft).

  4. Object Number: 2144496  Size: SH
  5. Assemble the brake hose fitting bolt (1) and 2 new brake hose fitting gaskets (2) to the brake hose (3).
  6. Install the brake hose assembly to the brake caliper and tighten the brake hose fitting bolt to  40 N·m (30 lb ft).
  7. Install the disc brake pads. Refer to Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement.
  8. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly and remove the disc brake rotor protectors. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
