Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 9290-01 Valve Lifter Remover (Slide Hammer Type)

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the engine cover from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  5. Remove the upper intake manifold from the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  6. Remove the lower intake manifold from the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  7. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  8. Remove the valve rocker arm from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  9. Remove the push rod from the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  10. Object Number: 34571  Size: SH
  11. Remove the valve lifters one at a time. Place the valve lifters in an organizer rack in order to ensure that the valve lifters are later returned to the original bore during installation.
  12. A stuck valve lifter can be removed using J 9290-01 .

Installation Procedure

Important: Replace the engine oil and oil filter if new valve lifters or a new camshaft is installed. Add engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent to the crankcase oil.

  1. Install the valve lifters and guide into the engine block. Lubricate the valve lifter and the body with engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent.
  2. Install the push rods into the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  3. Install the valve rocker arms to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  5. Install the lower intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  6. Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement
  7. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Install the engine cover in the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  9. Close the hood.
